Old Merrill Barber Bridge (Vero Beach) 1994

Posted on 26 July 2010 by Bill

On our way from Palm Bay and Melbourne to Highland Beach, we took a detour into Vero Beach on the old Merrill Barber Causeway over the Indian River on the ICW. You can see the new bridge under construction a couple of blocks north of the old bridge. The new bridge was completed early in 1995 and the old drawbridge was completely removed. NEW INFO (2009): I just did a Google Map of this area on the mainland side at Royal Palm Point… You would never know that there is where the old bridge approach was!

I caught a black drum near the bridge station nazi guy. He would stop trafic for shits and giggles. I’m not kidding; this guy would stop the bridge for a canoe. It was crazy.

Just wondering, was your friend the guy that worked at beachland elementary? I have lived here my whole life, I remember that from probably the early 90’s. I’m very sorry for your friend and you. RIP

hah, this is so cool. That bridge was gone before I was born. I wish i could have seen it, even though i have a weird phobia of bridges… =3 neato video. It’s so weird seeing the bridge i’ve been on for so many years not even completed yet.

I also recall the bumps of the bridge and trying to keep my motorcycle from not sliding on the metal grating.

I remember fishing off of this bridge back when I was 15 years old with my father…..too bad the new bridge did nothing at all to improve traffic…plus the money that was wasted to remove the whole bridge even although many residents wanted at least the west end left to fish off of….so they compromised by letting us have a catwalk under the new Barber Bridge that doesn’t even get close enough to the channel where the big grouper are.

WOW!!! This reaaaally takes me back. I’ve lived in Vero most of my life. Things have definitely changed. I can remember riding over the bridge in my mom’s care on the way to the beach and hearing that “bump-bump” of the tires. Thanks so much for posting!

Thank you, My husband and I met in 1995 and he moved here then as well. He never got to see the “old” bridge. It’s changed so much here.
