All Hail Shaq!

Posted on 20 September 2011 by tomski

All Hail Shaq!

Shaquille O’Neal is “Shaq” to the world, and will be remembered for the rest of time as one of the most pompous, slightly mouthy, best basketball players this country has ever seen

Shaq stands above (most) of the rest, considering his 7 foot 1inch height, and weighing in at 325 pounds; in fact, Shaq is one of the heaviest players who ever played in the NBA.  This is a man whose strength, skill, and perseverance carried him over a stellar nineteen-year career, as fans and opponents watched this giant “Gladiator” overpower opponents, and take points and rebounds away from them in the blink of an eye.

Shaq’s list of specialties and triumphs is longer than anyone can list in a simple article, and the number of stellar basketball uniforms he wore from the many teams that he gave his blood, sweat, and tears to are colorful and varied.

The first and foremost team for Shaq came along on what had to have been one of the most amazing days in his entire life; the day he was recruited right out of college as the first overall pick in the 1992 NBA Draft.  This is a center who not only strutted his stuff the very first year he went into the professional league, but he also walked away with the Rookie of the Year Award in 1992.  This was his beginning – his first basketball uniform playing with the Orlando Magic.  Not only was he the best rookie, but he also brought the Magic to the 1995 NBA Finals.  Shaq became the first rookie to be voted an All-Star starter since good, old Michael Jordan did it first in 1985.  The Magic loved Shaq, but had a bit of a problem within their ranks.  Finishing 41–41, winning twenty more games than the previous season was great; however, the team ultimately missed the playoffs by virtue of a tie-breaker with the Pacers.  The Magic was a bit “up in the air” where sports writers and sportscasters were concerned.  Many were calling for the coach to retire, seeing as that – with Shaq – they should’ve been able to win the NBA finals, period.

When Shaq decided to step away from everything that the Magic was going through, O’Neal became a free agent.  And in the summer of 1996, he found himself at another pivotal moment of his career when he was named to the United States Olympics basketball team.  It was no surprise when the team won the gold medal for their work on the court.  Seeing as that absolutely every member of the dream team represented the biggest names and most volatile and valuable players in the world of basketball, no other country even came close to scoring the points necessary to take the gold away from America.

When ‘real-life’ came back in and the Olympics were a memory, Shaq had decisions that had to be made.  Not only did the fans have difficulty with the Magic’s head office, but they also sincerely wondered why the Magic would go out and offer Shaq a contract worth $115 million dollars.  Even for a world that had the likes of Michael Jordan in their country, this deal seemed a bit ridiculous for the power of just one guy.  But Shaq seemed to dislike any idea of going back to the Magic anyhow, seeing as that the player’s and the fans both seemed “miffed” at him.  He was never quite sure why, either.  After all, Shaq had never demanded that ridiculous amount of money, he simply demanded to play the game and be allowed to play it well.

Soon, Shaq did follow in the steps of the other “big name,” Michael Jordan, and used his power as a free agent to become an even bigger icon than he already was.  Shaq signed with everyone’s favorite, the Los Angeles Lakers.  This is where Shaq had his biggest triumphs and some of his worst tension and stress throughout his career.  While wearing the Lakers uniform, Shaq won three consecutive championships in 2000, 2001, and 2002.  In fact, the early 21st Century proved that the Lakers were the unbeatable ‘dream team’ that no one ever wanted to go up against.  Not to mention, O’Neal was named the Most Valuable Player of the NBA Finals all THREE times, and had the highest scoring average for a center in NBA Finals history.  However, Shaq had some difficulties there as well.  Kobe Bryant and Shaq simply did not get along and, oddly enough, after so much success, Shaq was traded to the Miami Heat in 2004.

But the championships didn’t stop for Shaq!  With the Miami Heat, his fourth NBA championship occurred in 2006.  But, oddly enough, it seemed that the ‘higher powers’ wanted Shaq to help out all of the NBA – and spread around his skill and talent to help as many teams as humanly possible.

In 2006, Shaq found himself in the basketball uniform of the Phoenix Suns, followed by the uniforms of the Cleveland Cavaliers and then, finally the Boston Celtics.  Shaq was always “back” in every single town, city, and basketball uniform that seemed to have been created – bringing with him a  monumental supply of skill, talent, and the strength to never give up.

Shaq is also a huge supporter of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.  In fact, in his hometown of Newark, New Jersey, Shaq credits the Boys and Girls Club for allowing him to be able to have a safe place to get off the streets when he was a young boy, and work tirelessly to become the basketball icon he eventually became.  As Shaq was quoted as saying:  “It gave me something to do. I’d just go there to shoot.”  That was Shaq as a young boy – with absolutely no preview of the incredible future he was going to find on the basketball courts and in the history books.  One of his most memorable games was when Shaq led his Robert G. Cole High School basketball team from San Antonio, Texas to a 68–1 record during his two years there and helped the team win the state championship during his senior year; and Shaq’s791 rebounds during the 1989 season still remains as the a state record for a player in any classification.

Shaq has had his ups and downs in the basketball world.  He has also had blessed triumphs and extremely ‘bad days.’  He has been seen as one of the ultimate players in basketball!  And whether good day or bad – happy fan or angry opponent – Shaq has earned his top spot in the rankings of the best athletes of all time; and in the world of basketball there aren’t many who will ever beat this immortal King.

All Hail Shaq!

Reserve a History Flight on WWII Warbird: Vero Beach Municipal Airport

Posted on 11 February 2011 by VBnewswire

Fly a WWII Warbird. History Flight ‘Until They’re Home’ Barnstormer Tour flies Feb. 12-14 at Vero Beach Municipal Airport.

History Flight brings its breathtaking “Until They’re Home” Barnstormer Tour to Vero Beach (FL) Municipal Airport Saturday-Monday (Feb. 12-14) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, and will participate in the airport’s Vero Beach Aviation Day festivities set for Feb. 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Barnstormer Tour offers the opportunity to take an exhilarating flight in one of three World War II warbirds, and at the same time help fund an important cause – locating America’s Missing In Action from World War II.

A 501c3 non-profit foundation, History Flight operates three of World War II’s most important aircraft, all professionally restored to give passengers “the thrill of a lifetime.” First there is “Barbie III, a North American B-25H Mitchell Bomber (the only H model still flying worldwide), where up to six passengers form a tightly knit Bomber Crew flying in the cockpit, waist or tail gunner positions. Or, you can take the controls (with a certified pilot aboard) of a two-seat AT-6 / SNJ Texan or open cockpit N2S Stearman biplane. Both airplanes are quick and maneuverable, and flights can include aerobatics and combat maneuvers.

History Flight takes these flying museums to regional airports so people can experience firsthand the thrill of World War II aviation. There are three flight packages available on the AT6-Texan and Stearman airplanes ranging from a smooth 15-minute Intro Flight to 30- and 60-minute Barnstormer packages with optional three-camera videos that capture all the action. The “Bomber Crew” package on the B-25H Bomber is 30 minutes with an optional video.

Each tax-deductible flight funds ongoing research and search missions that help bring America’s missing WWII servicemen home from remote battlefields and crash sites. To date, History Flight has helped locate the remains of over 200 MIAs from the Pacific Theater.

On Saturday, Feb. 12, at 5 p.m. there will be a free presentation on History Flight’s successful search missions to Tarawa Atoll. Since 2006, History Flight has sent four search teams to the Pacific Island of Tarawa, where over 300 U.S. Marines were buried and their remains never recovered. History Flight’s work, thoroughly documented and compiled into a 400-page report, sparked a congressional resolution that resulted in the military deploying their own search teams to Tarawa to search for the lost graves. The Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command conducted a recovery mission to Tarawa in August-September 2010. This year, History Flight plans additional trips to Tarawa to continue its research.

To reserve a History Flight: Vero Beach Municipal Airport is located at 3400 Cherokee Drive, Vero Beach FL 32960. For more information, to make a reservation or get complete details on each flight package visit www.HistoryFllight.com , or call History Flight toll free at 1-888-743-3311. No flying experience is necessary.

For more information on Vero Beach Aviation Day visit www.eaa99.org.

The 2011 Until They’re Home Barnstormer Tour is based January through May at the Deland Florida Municipal Airport, with weekend excursions to Florida regional airports. A national tour kicks off in June. To learn more about History Flight’s search missions to the Pacific visit www.HistoryFlight.com.

Judyth Piazza chats with John Basedow about 10 Tips for Nutrition Success (Click Here to Listen to Audio Interview)

John Basedow has achieved international recognition and created a media empire with Fitness Made Simple, which includes DVDs, CDs, supplements, and infomercials all aimed at raising awareness about the importance of making fitness a part of your life. From starting out in his parent`s basement to being seen on television sets across the country and deemed a pop culture icon,” John`s journey is a true rags to riches story. He`s been featured on numerous TV and radio shows as well as in print media including the Los Angeles Times, the National Examiner, and the New York Times.

John has appeared as a model in or has written articles for just about every major exercise magazine. He`s a regular guest on radio programs across the United States and is the star of a reality series, John Basedow TV, which is based on his life.

John helps out various charities including The American Heart Association and St. Jude Children`s Research Hospital and motivates others to follow their dreams with his popular Power to Change Your Body & Life Seminars nationwide.

Discover John Basedow`s secrets for getting the body you`ve always wanted

Fitness expert and media icon John Basedow`s body-transforming plan is literally Fitness Made Simple. After trying just about every fitness fad and gimmick with little success, John developed this multidimensional approach that is improving the bodies and lives of thousands of men and women, from teenagers to grandparents. Fitness Made Simple is not just about losing weight. It`s about changing your entire body composition so that you increase lean muscle mass and decrease body fat. This easy-to-follow program eliminates all the guesswork for building the body of your dreams with John`s comprehensive Fitness Triangle:

Nutrition: By concentrating on natural protein sources, healthy fats, and slow-digesting carbs, you`ll never be hungry, your junk food cravings will disappear, and fat will melt from your body.

Exercise: Utilizing a combination of cardiovascular and weight training workouts, you`ll look great, feel better, and strip away fat to reveal those six-pack abs!

Supplementation: Not all supplements are created equal. John shows you which fat loss and muscle building products can actually produce cosmetically significant results, rather than just false hope and a depleted bank account.

Plus, John tells his own inspiring story of how he took control of his body and life, while accumulating years of health and fitness wisdom along the way. His signature John-isms –helpful quotes sprinkled throughout this book–will keep you motivated to stick with your new fitness lifestyle.

Jason “Big Six” Estrada Is Ready To Rumble on The American Perspective

Posted on 28 January 2011 by Judyth Piazza

Live From Vero Beach, Florida: Judyth Piazza chats with Jason “Big Six” Estrada (click here to listen to audio interview)

2004 United States Olympian Jason “Big Six” Estrada, one of the most decorated amateur boxers in U.S. history, rated among the world`s best super heavyweights for several years, has yet to reach his potential as a professional.

Jason`s most impressive performance as a pro arguably was six fights ago, when “Big Six” won a one-sided 10-round decision from former NABO/NABA/WBC Continental Americas heavyweight champion Lance “Mount” Whitaker (32-5-1, 27 KOs) in their April 4, 2008 ESPN2 FNF show headliner.

Providence native Estrada has fought anybody put in the ring with him, never turning down a fight, and none of his opponents has had a losing record (311-101-15 combined record of his opponents) when they fought “Big Six.”

His three losses were all on the road in the backyards of former world champion Tomasz Adamek, 2004 Olympic gold medalist Alexander Povetkin and Travis Walker. Estrada has never been floored, never mind stopped, in his pro career.

His much-anticipated pro debut December 10, 2004 ended in a unanimous four-round decision in his favor against Joseph Kenneth at Foxwoods Resort Casino.

Four months later, Jason put Jerry Simpson to sleep at 2:35 of the opening round, throwing a devastating knockout punch that resulted in Simpson being taken out of the ring on a stretcher and evaluated at a nearby hospital (he was okay).

He followed June 17 with a unanimous four-round decision against Demetrice King (7-6), in which, King`s corner tried to stop the fight by throwing in the towel. Only the referee can stop a fight in Rhode Island, however, and Demetrice managed to last the remainder of the fight.

Jason floored Earl Ladson (10-6) three times en route to a unanimous six-round decision (60-51, 60-51, 60-51) on August 26, 2005 and followed that (Nov. 23) with a six-round decision against highly respected veteran Najee Shaheed (21-10-2) in back-to-back Providence-based matches.

In February of 2006, Estrada stepped into the ring at the Dunkin` Donuts Center in Providence on “The Contender Special – East Coast Pride” card against his toughest and most experienced opponent, Yanqui Diaz (13-3), who had registered victories against previously unbeaten Juan Carlos Gomez (37-0) via a shocking first-round TKO and former world title challenger Vaughen Bean (44-4). The fight, however, was stopped in the first round due to a cut on Diaz` head from an unintentional head-butt and ruled a “no contest.”

In only his sixth pro fight, Jason went 10 rounds against veteran Robert Wiggins (20-6-1), pitching a shutout (100-90 three times) in complete domination of his cross-town Providence rival, who has beaten Derek Bryant, Courage Tshabala, Eric Kirkland and Cisse Salif, as well as been in with world heavyweight title challengers Monte Barrett and DeVarryl Williamson.

Jason extended his perfect winning rounds streak to 39 on Sept. 23, 2006, easily defeating Maurice Wheeler (10-7-1) by unanimous eight-round decision (80-72 three times) in Hartford.

On November 17, 2006, Estrada injured his arm and was unable to extend his vaunted jab, resulting in an eight-round majority loss (76-76, 75-77, 74-78) on ShoBox to Travis “Freight Train” Walker (21-0-1), who Jason has beaten three times without a loss in the amateurs.

Trimmed down to 239 pounds and in his best condition of his pro career, Jason returned to the ring March 6, 2007 at Mohegan Sun Arena, where he pitched a shutout, winning a six-round decision (60-54 three times) against upset specialist Zack Page (13-11-1), who had beaten former world champion Lou Del Valle, on ESPN2 Friday Night Fights.

On May 11, 2007, Estrada weighed in at a pro career low of 238 pounds, and he easily won a six round decision (60-54, 60-54, 59-56) versus former IBU heavyweight title-holder Robert Hawkins (21-7), who went on to upset Dominick Guinn.

Jason closed out 2007 with a devastating knockout of James Northey (11-1, 8 KOs), former NABC title-holder, in the fourth round of their fight in October. Estrada easily won a unanimous 10-round decision (99-91, 99-91, 98-92) against former world title challenger Charles Shufford in January, 2008 at Foxwoods.

After Jason`s win by 10-round decision in April, 2008 versus Whitaker, Estrada registered a victory by seventh-round TKO against Moultrie Witherspoon (14-1) last May in Rhode Island and came back three months later to win an eight-round decision versus Texas State champion Domonic Jenkins (13-9) at Mohegan Sun.

Big Six” came within a single point on one judge`s scorecard of pitching a complete shutout November 29, 2008, winning an eight-round decision (80-72, 80-72, 79-73) against Philadelphia veteran Derek Bryant (20-4-1) at Twin River.

This past April, Estrada accepted the challenge to fight No. 1 IBF contender Povetkin (16-0), who won the gold medal in the super heavyweight division at the 2004 Olympics, in Povetkin`s German home base. Estrada and Povetkin were supposed to have fought two times in the amateurs, but they never did as Estrada won gold at the 2003 Pan-Am Games and Povetkin took top honors in the 2003 World Championships. Estrada went the full 10-round distance against Povetkin, who won a unanimous decision that was much closer than the final scoring (99-94, 98-92, 97-93).

Estrada bounced right back September 2 in Syracuse (NY), stopping veteran Zuri Lawrence (24-14-4) in the seventh round.

In his last fight (Feb. 6, 2010), Jason went into the lion`s den – Prudential Center in Newark before 10,000 Polish fans – to take on Adamek for the IBF International heavyweight title. Estrada extended Adamek the full 12 rounds and lost a 12-round decision that was much closer than the final scores indicated (115-113, 116-112, 118-110).

The 29-year-old Estrada was one of the most highly decorated American amateur boxers ever, compiling an amazing 261-14 record in U.S. competition, as well as the first boxer to win both the U.S. Nationals and U.S. Challenge three years (2001-2003) in a row. The highlight of his amateur career was representing the United States in the 2004 Olympics, although physical problems hampered his training and performances.

During his extraordinary amateur career, Estrada defeated some of today`s leading professionals, including former world title challenger DaVarryl “The Touch of Sleep” Williamson (26-6, 22 KOs), unbeaten Malik Scott (32-0, 11 KOs), Donnell “The Real Touch of Sleep” Holmes (32-1-2, 28 KOs), Malcolm “The Showstopper” Tann (23-4, 12 KOs), and Felix “Bad News” Cora, Jr. (22-3-2, 10 KOs).

Jason Estrada, now promoted by Boxing 360, is managed and trained by his father, Dr. Roland Estrada.

Matt “Sharp Shooter” Remillard Hits the Mark on The American Perspective

Posted on 26 January 2011 by Judyth Piazza

Judyth Piazza chats with ‘Matt Sharp Shooter’ Remillard America`s Leading American Featherweight on The American Perspective (Click here to listen to interview)

America`s leading American featherweight, unbeaten NABF and NABO champion Matt “Sharp Shooter” Remillard, has targeted a 2011 world title fight.

The 24-year-old Remillard (23-0, 14 KOs), currently a promotional free agent, won all three of his 2010 fights by knockout. He has climbed the ratings systems to No. 3 in the WBO, No. 6 in the WBC, and No. 7 in the WBA.

“Ratings do mean something because I`m eligible in three major boxing organizations to fight for the world time,” Remillard said. At No. 3 in the WBO, I`m so close that I need to stay ready in case I get a call. If either one of the two fighters rated higher than me (No. 1 Daniel Ponce De Leon and No. 2 Chonlatarn Piriapinyp) fight for another title, lose, or get injured, I move up and then I`m even closer to a mandatory shot.

“I may be the only person getting in the ring to fight, but it takes a successful team to win a world title, and everybody has to be focused on the same thing (prepared for a world title shot). My manager, Bret Hallenbeck, has done an outstanding job and I don`t think he`s received the credit he deserves. I`m very happy with my team and everything going on in my career. I will have a new promoter in 2011 that will help me get a world title shot.”

Due to promotional problems, Remillard only fought three times in 2010, stopping Rafeal Lora for the NABF title and Carlos Rivera in a NABF title defense and for the vacant NABO belt. In his last fight November 20, Matt overcame two cuts resulting from forearms to easily win an 8-round decision (80-72, 80-72, 79-73) against Oscar Cuero (13-3).

“This has been a tough year because of my promotional problems,” Matt remarked. I would have liked to have fought more often; I`m a fighter and I love to train. I don`t have control over that, though. All I can do is get better each fight. I look at it as I`m another year closer to my ultimate goal “fighting for and winning the world title. It`s not going to be easy because my division is hot.”
