Evander Holyfield and challenger Sherman Williams Fight Abruptly Ended After 3 Rounds

Posted on 23 January 2011 by VBnewswire

Last night`s title fight between World Boxing Federation Heavyweight Champion Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield and challenger Sherman “Tank” Williams abruptly ended after three rounds due to a cut over Holyfield`s left eye that happened in the second round suffered in the second round. Holyfield was unable to continue after three and the fight was declared a no contest because the cut was caused by an accidental head butt and the fight didn`t go four rounds.

“I`m cut,” Holyfield said after the fight. “He head-butted me. He came down on me with his head. I don`t know about my next fight (March 5 vs. Brian Nielson in Denmark). I`m cut, I`m cut. I`ll give Sherman a rematch.”

“I`m back,” said Williams who staggered Holyfield at the end of the third round with an overhand right. “This fight was circus: on again, off again. But I stayed focused. I hurt him with an overhand punch. Let`s bring this fight to Atlantis – Holyfield-Williams II. I`ll take his place in Denmark and fight Nielson.”

Holyfield-Williams headlined the “Redemption In America” pay-per-view card, viewed by boxing fans in 17 different countries worldwide, live in front of a black-tie crowd from America`s resort – The Greenbrier`s Colonial Hall – in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

“Redemption In America: The Journey Begins Now” pay-per-view event, presented by ARK Promotions in association with The Greenbrier, was distributed in North America by Integrated Sports Media.

“Redemption” fused world-class boxing and entertainment; showcasing a production that included high-energy music presented by Broadway performers, along with dancers and aerial artists. World-renowned saxophone player Clarence Clemons also headlined a live band between fights throughout the night.

In the co-feature, WBC #16 heavyweight Kevin “Kingpin” Johnson (24-1-1, 10 KOs) dropped a much taller Julius “Towering Inferno” Long (15-15, 13 KOs) twice in the final round en route to a convincing win by 8-round unanimous decision. Johnson, a former world title challenger, won seven rounds on all three judges` scorecards.

Former world heavyweight title challenger Monte Barrett (34-9-1) and veteran Charles “Showboat” Davis fought to an 8-round majority draw.

In the PPV opening bout, unbeaten Detroit middleweight Willie Fortune (10-0, 5 KOs) won an 8-round split decision against Lithuania-native Donatas Bondoravas (10-2-1, 3 KOs) in a spirited bout.

In one of three off-PPV fights, Detroit middleweight Domonique Dolton (10-0, 6 KOs) kept his undefeated record intact, pitching a complete shutout (80-72 three times) versus veteran Marcos “The Terminator” Primera for an 8-round unanimous decision.

NABA Heavyweight Champion Cedric “The Bos” Boswell (33-1, 26 KOs) successfully defended his title, knocking out Dominique “Diamond” Alexander (19-10, 9 KOs) in the second round via the three-knockdown rule.

Cleveland junior welterweight Miguel “Silky Smooth” Gonzalez (13-2, 12 KOs), 2008 U.S. National AAU champion, dropped Ramon Che” Guevara three times in the sixth round for an automatic knockout victory.

Special guests at ringside included former world heavyweight champions Lennox Lewis and Larry Holmes, as well as 4-time world heavyweight title challenger Jameel McCline.

Holyfield-Williams Post Fight Quotes

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, West Virginia (January 22, 2011)

Evander Holyfield: “I`m very disappointed. He fought the way he should have. He understood he would have his head low when he threw the overhand right. If I didn`t move back, we`d clash heads. It was to his advantage to get lower because he`s short. Being that short he had to fight that fight. He didn`t have to, he chose to.”

“Stuff like this happens and I`ll shake it off. Hopefully, I`ll get this stitched up and it won`t be a problem. Life goes on, it`s part of boxing.”

Sherman Williams: “I`ve had my own personal setbacks. To get over what I did was a miracle. I trained hard for this fight. I was fighting a legend and I can`t take anything away from him. I feel like I should have won by TKO. I cut him with an overhand right, but I respect him.”

“I root for him. He`s almost 50 and still training and performing. I admire what he`s done but it`s time to let younger guys fight and older guys do television commentary. He`s not as good looking as I am. You`ve made sacrifices, won 4 world championships and fought in the Olympics. But this is a new time, a new era. Mr. Holyfield shouldn`t be taking punches from younger guys. That`s how I feel. It`s time for him to move on but, if he wants, we can do it again.”

“After the first round he was falling into my trap. When he felt I was in retreat…bang with the overhand right, and that`s when I saw blood.”

An Interview With Professional Boxer Dat Nguyen

Posted on 18 November 2010 by John Danz, Jr.

Boxing. To some, a sweet science. To others, a barbaric punch in the face contest. Either way, one man sees the highly competitive and grueling sport as his calling.

Dat Nguyen was born in Bien Hoa, Vietnam on October 10, 1982 as the son of a Vietnamese POW, and came to the States at age eight. After coming to the States, he began boxing after watching his brother kickbox in Hawaii, and almost instantaneously began showing promise after winning a Junior Olympic Title in 1996.

After graduating high school in 2000, he got a full scholarship to Northern Michigan University as a part of their Olympic boxing program. Adding to his success, he won medals at the 2002 and 2003 National Golden Gloves event, and is the first Vietnamese-American to win a spot at the US National Championships as well. He turned professional in 2004, and has amassed an impressive record of 17 wins and one loss with six wins by way of knockout.

I recently spoke with Dat about his career, future plans and his newly opened boxing academy in Vero Beach, Florida.

JD: First off – what made you want to become a professional boxer, and who were your biggest influences?

Dat: I think what made me really want to be a professional boxer was because when I was growing up, I saw guys like Oscar De La Hoya winning gold in the Olympics and I wondered why I never saw any Vietnamese in the Olympics for boxing. So I continued in that path and tried to make the Olympics. My biggest influences would be my mother, who worked very hard and sacrificed so much of her life to give my brothers and me a better life. So I wanted to do something special to make her proud.

JD: You`ve done some great things in the ring, and your record, silver medal in Golden Gloves and bronze at the US championships – as well as being the first Vietnamese-American to be in a US men`s challenge – reflects that statement. What was your proudest moment in your career, and why?

Dat: I think the proudest moment of my amateur career was getting to the final of the National Golden Gloves. The title of Golden Gloves has been won by many great boxing champions, and I wanted to be one of them. I fought hard for five nights with five different opponents to get to the finals but the judges were never in my corner. However, I still believe that it was my greatest accomplishment for getting there and it gave me the opportunity to showcase my talents on National TV for the first time.

JD: Is boxing a pretty hot thing in Vietnam? How does training over there differ from how boxers might train here?

Dat: Vietnam doesn`t have pro boxing right now, but I think the government is considering staging some big fights there soon. Vietnam is very new to boxing but there economy is booming and the people there are showing an interest in all things Western.  They are also developing their amateur team to compete against other Southeast Asian countries and eventually will try to earn their spot into the Olympics.

JD: Who would you say was your toughest opponent?

Dat: Honestly I haven`t faced any fighters of my caliber yet but I am sure there is still someone out there that will allow me to showcase my talent.   However, I feel like I haven`t been fighting at 100%, I`ve made some fights harder than they should have been. But I`m a professional athlete and my profession dictates that I perform at 100% 100% of the time – that`s why I have changed my work ethic. I`m working harder now than ever to make the necessary adjustment.

JD: You`ve opened up a boxing academy in Vero Beach – what prompted you to open it there? What`s your favorite part about teaching what you`ve learned over the years?

Dat: What prompted me to open up the academy was – first of all – I wanted to have a quality facility for myself to train at and be able to control my own destiny. The boxing gym is essentially my office, and I want to remind myself what I need to do to get to the top. Secondly, I wanted to apply my knowledge and experience to those who wanted to learn the art of boxing and also see it in a different light (the teaching side) and perhaps remind myself of the things I`m teaching.

JD: So what sets your academy apart from other academies a prospective student would seek?

Dat: I would say what sets my academy apart from others is the location and the atmosphere. I have the beach, park and the bridges nearby for the best training. Everything is very close. The fighters will get the best possible training without any distractions. The way I set up my gym is to create that extra motivation that people need for a good workout. I want to provide a unique atmosphere that people feel when they come into the academy.

JD: You`re still pretty much in your prime, so what are your main goals for the future? What can we expect from you?

Dat: My main goals right now are to work hard and give myself a 100% chance to be the best that I can be and give it my all to try to achieve my goals. You can definitely expect me to continue to work hard to get to the top.

JD: What advice would you give to aspiring boxers that want to make it?

Dat: They have to truly believe in themselves when no one else will and that advice goes for anything that someone is trying to accomplish. They have to use that as their motivation to work hard every day and to stay focused.

JD: Finally, any upcoming fights we can expect, and if so, when and where?

Dat: Right now I no longer have a manager who looks out for my career so I`m doing self-managing. My promoter has scheduled a fight for December 18th in Houston TX.

Miracle Boxing Academy Provides Comprehensive “Boxing for Fitness” Programs

Posted on 13 November 2010 by Judyth Piazza

Judyth Piazza Scores a Knock-Out with Dat Nguyen, Boxing SuperStar on The American Perspective Radio Program (Click Here to Listen)

Miracle Boxing Academy provides a comprehensive “Boxing for Fitness” program, a new craze with people craving the fitness results boxing gives. We tailor every program to the specific needs of the individual to ensure everyone reaches their goals and targets. Punch your way to a fitter, healthier person!

Boxing has become one of the most effective methods of cardiovascular personal training. Aimed directly at weight loss and fat reduction, boxing is a great workout for the entire body, including range of motion and core strengthening.

Not only does sparring with a partner or trainer raise your heart rate for quick bursts of time (the most effective method of burning fat), but it also works almost the entire range of muscles in your body.

Forcing you to squat from a low to high position with proper form and a correct defense, boxing works the legs and bum almost as one. In addition, the twisting and turning work your core and abdominal muscles. The tightening and toning of the arms and chest come from the actual jab and cutting motion.

Boxing works almost every muscle in your body, helping to define and tone your shape quickly and effectively.

The Boxing Workout:
A boxer is the best conditioned athlete in the world bar none. Boxing, whether for competition or solely for recreational purposes provides the most rounded and well balanced workout you will ever find. When taught properly with solidly grounded fundamentals and in a progressive type manner, such as we teach at Miracle Boxing Academy, it will provide you with the utmost in cardiovascular fitness, as well as develop strength, speed, and agility at levels you may not have thought possible before, no matter your present age or physical condition. Our boxing program will also bring you the ultimate in peace of mind through its phenomenal stress reduction aspects, which you will find lacking from all other types of workouts. Because our workout utilizes more muscle groups than any other single motion type workout, such as cycling or jogging, it tends to result in fewer repetitive injuries or strains. In an hour of boxing a 180 pound man can burn more than 500 calories. With a solid fundamental base and a little motivation, you too can receive the full benefits and phenomenal results a good boxing program can provide, whether it is for purposes of competition, or you just want to come in and hit the bags. When fitness comes first, the rest is easy.

Boxing For Cardio Strength Muscle Groups targeted:
Boxing involves a lot of muscle groups. These are the bicep, quadriceps, hamstrings, Gastrocnemius and Soleus muscles, and Erector Spinae muscle group. In addition, boxing exercises also include the abdominal muscles, internal and external oblique muscles groups, Pectoralis muscle group, and Latissimus muscle group.

Class Description:
For persons interested in training classes, following is a beginning level class description; Start with varied warm up activities and light flexibility. Learn fundamental stance, directional footwork, and striking technique. Learn to shadowbox combining foot work, head movement, and striking technique, transferring skills to light and heavy bags for a super cardio total body conditioning workout. Further sharpen skills and increase stamina with the use of punch mitt and punch shield floor workout routines. Introduction to various callisthenic and polymeric exercises followed by strength training with various gymnasium equipments from dumbbells to medicine balls to strength bands etc. Intermediate and advanced level technique and conditioning drills are taught when students progress to that level. Some example lessons for intermediate and advanced level class workouts will consist of counter punch drills with partners, interval training with high level activity output followed by moderately paced activities, 2-6 rounds of non stop work out combining boxing skills with conditioning exercises to develop breathing patterns, light supervised sparring for those who wish to venture into the ring, boxing specific core stability training exercises with emphasis on speed, etc.

Our ultimate goal at Miracle Boxing Academy is to provide the community, youth and adults alike, a quality facility and program to instill discipline, build confidence and self esteem, and better overall physical condition to combat coronary heart diseases, obesity, and other general related illnesses. Our efforts are also aimed at enhancing mental and spiritual awareness, promoting well being, and producing better citizens.

“Boxing helps you overcome fear. It doesn’t mean that boxing will take away fear completely, but will teach you to live and function well within that fear.” Cus D’Amato Legendary Trainer

“Boxing is a superior workout along with developing an invaluable skill. A boxing workout is the perfect combination of cardiovascular and muscle training. You’ll burn more calories, build more stamina, develop and tone more muscle in a boxing workout than you will with any other training method.” _Dr. Joseph Estwanik Sports Medicine Specialist

The Debate Over Online Sports Betting

Posted on 24 June 2010 by Bill

With the invention of the Internet came many great conveniences: Having easy access to encyclopedias, maps, and various entertainment sites. Online sports betting, along with other forms of Internet gambling has been a cause for debate for many years now. The conflict originates over the question of whether or not Internet gambling is against the law. There is no clear cut law stating that Internet gambling is illegal.

Since 1961, sports gambling across state lines has been illegal, but the Wire Act outlawing Interstate gambling was put in place long before the invention of computers and the Internet. Also, the Wire Act doesn’t clearly state anything about the legality of gambling in general or just sports betting. The Justice Department seems to think that the Wire Act would apply to all forms of Internet gambling, including online sports betting. Litigation between gambling website owners and the Justice Department resulted in the United States District Court of Louisiana favoring the Justice Department and dismissing the case.

Many legislative actions have been taken in regards to Internet gambling. Americans are no longer allowed to use electronic transfers, checks, or credit or debit cards to fund wagers. These means of payment are forbidden by the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. While this can put a kink in a player’s day, it does not ban the act of online sports betting. Several lawmakers have sought to profit from the boom of online sports betting by proposing to legalize and tax online sports gambling; these legislative measures would generate billions in tax revenue for the government

Is seems that the suits on Capitol Hill cannot decide what exactly to do about online sports wagering. While it is currently illegal to participate in Internet gambling, many players do so every day. If you’re an American who bets online, keep in mind that you do so at your own risk!

March Madness 2010: A Season for Smart Sports Betting

Posted on 31 March 2010 by selena

It’s March Madness once again – that time of the year when 64 seeded NCAA College Basketball teams compete for the Division 1A Championship. As the sports drama begins and unfolds, so does the March Madness betting frenzy.

This American sportsbetting tradition all began from a small annual tournament hosted by the Illinois High School Association in Illinois. Henry V. Porter was the first to use “March Madness” to describe the rapidly spreading betting fever.  Soon “March Madness bets” were used by media and fans to describe their wagers.

NCAA Basketball: East Regional Wisconsin vs Cornell Mar 21

Today, the March Madness sportsbetting market is only behind the NFL when it comes to the size of dollar bets.

The NCAA Tournament is one of the most exciting spectacles in sports, with many upsets and unexpected wins. Adding to the challenge of predicting winners this year is the less number of seeded power teams compared to the 2009 NCAA basketball tournament. Even big name teams such as UCLA and North Carolina are not joining the tournament this year.

Still bettors can use some smart betting basics to better their winning odds. Based on past tournaments, #1 seeds have won 100% of the time against #16 seeds, and the #2 seeds have won the #15 seeds 96% of the time. Picking seeds that look safe go as far as #3 seeds. Beyond that, bettors need to put more thoughts in their picks.

There are other statistical probabilities that bettors can base their decisions on. Teams that have made it to past NCAA tournaments often end up doing better than newcomers. Teams that have more seniors in the squad are more likely to win. In college basketball, experience is a weapon.

Parlay is the most popular type of March Madness bet, but if straight bet is not your cup of tea, you can bet on team matchups. No matter, sportsbetting experts agree that it’s better to bet in small chunks than place your entire bet outright on a complete bracket.

The March Madness sportsbetting frenzy will begin on March 16, when the 2010 NCAA Tournament kicks off with an opening round game. This will be followed by the main tournament on March 18th. There will be surprising upsets. There will be Cinderella stories. There are lots of betting options, but the ones who practice smart betting most often end up with a great payoff.
